Spanish wine production methods and expansion rate have moved forward considerably since Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants first started buying and selling Iberian Wines over 40 years ago. The drive to improving quality has been equally matched by the ever increasing officially designated wine regions of Spain. No other European wine country comes any where near this phenomenal and certainly successful expansion and diversification.
Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants of Southampton, Hampshire, UK are committed followers of Spanish Wines and specialise in SEVEN of the major and authoritatively designated wine regions.
These regions being FIRST Rioja…..a region of 3 subzones, namely Rioja Baja, Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. All three producing red and white wines of varying styles and qualities to suit the various markets they specialise in, many growers will be producing good quality wines to match the average person's budget, while others will focusing on the top end of the market where fine Rioja Wines will be commanding prices in excess of thirty pounds a bottle. Many followers of Spanish Wines in the UK are probably more familiar with Rioja Wines than any other Spanish Wines, because of Rioja's massive exposure in the many hotels and restaurants around the Spanish Mediterranean Coastline.
Our SECOND region is the equally famous Ribera del Duero located just South of Rioja and Navarra. Ribera del Duero is highly respected by many and many see the region as Spain's most prestigious wine growing area……. it conjures up names like Pingus, Pesquera and Vega Sicilia, all great wines that command World wide respect. In reality Ribera del Duero produces great wines and fine quality wines to suit most budgets.
The THIRD region we cover is Rias Bais, an area quite different from Rioja and Ribera del Duero…..seafood is king in Galicia and so are the white wines of Rias Baixas. Much greener and damper, this landscape is not like most other parts of Spain and consequently so are the wines which are dominated by the white Albarino grape and the wine known of the same name is now found in most seafood restaurants in Spain and also the UK.
Staying towards the North of Spain our FOURTH region listed is Navarra, maybe a wine province that needs a little more publicity. There is certainly a wrong perception that wines of Navarra are of lesser standing than its close neighbours Rioja and Ribera del Duero…..not true….since Navarra produces many big lucious red wines from blends of Spanish and French grapes (yes French grapes) with some wonderful labels such as Ochoa and Chivite whose wines grace many a fine table in Europe.
Catalunya is our FIFTH listing and the wider region supports two of the well known appellations in Penedes and the distinguished Priorato wine. One could say Penedes wines are for everyday drinking and Priorato for special occasions, although there are exceptions.Castilla Y Leon is our SIXTH region which includes three ever improving subzones of Toro, Rueda and Cigales. Rueda is producing white wines of class, Toro who claim a unique Version of the Tempranillo grape produce red wines that can match most qualities in Spain. For summer drinking the light fruity wines from Cigales are perfect.
Castilla La Mancha famed for many reasons in Spain's history is the SEVENTH region of Spain where the interest of Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants extends. This huge central plateaux is home to many assorted grape varieties including Garnache and Tempranillo and is by far the largest single area for wine production in Spain. Careful selection will be rewarded with excellent value wines.

Marques de Burgos Crianza DO Ribera del Duero is deep garnet in the glass with purple glints. The nose enjoys perfumes of blackberries, mango and honeysuckle. The wine is full-bodied on the palate with lot of dark fruit and soft warm spice, there are hints of vanilla on a very long lasting finish.
Albarino DO, Martin Codax, Rias Baixas, Galicia, is a brilliant straw-yellow in colour with green reflections. Citrus notes of lime and grapefruit mingle with pear, apple and white flowers on the nose. The wine is fresh, long, persistent and well-balanced on the palate.
Medium to full bodied dry red with complexity and finesse
Prado Rey Crianza, Ribera del Duero has a complex aroma of fruits with hints of balsamic, intense ruby colour with an elegant structure. This wine has been aged for 12 months in French barrels and a further 3 months in Nvers
Finca Villacreces \"Pruno\" Ribera del Duero is deep black cherry in colour. There are aromas of red fruit embodied with toffee and hints of oak from French barrel ageing. The palate reveals lovely ripe red fruit and hints of liquorice movingtowards a long tastey finish.
Finca Museum Cigales Reserva is deep red cherry in colour. The nose is reminiscent of red berries, blackcurrants and cranberries. On the palate, lots more dark fruit with hints of liquorice, soft warm spice and vanilla from oak ageing in new French barrels for twenty two months. The aftertaste is long lasting, with even more fruit and vanilla, also hints of roasted hazelnuts.
Familia Castano \"Coleccion\" DO Yecla is a dark and intense shiny red in the glass. It is complex on the nose, with ripe black fruit aromas, notes of warm spice and hints of oak. Soft on the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet delicate, with elegant tannins.
Bodegas Lan Rioja D12 has a lovely cherry red colour with violet hues. Aromas of red fruit and liquorice combine well with cocoa and hints of floral notes such as violet. Tasty, round and silky on the palate with more fruit and soft warm spices on the persistent finish.
Izadi Rioja Reserva is a bright ruby red colour in the glass. Rich aromatic intensity and a nice balance of redfruit, liquorice and soft warm spices, with hints of oak from ageing in the background. Elegant and round on the palate with a very long aftertaste full of floral and ripe fruit notes.
Santiago Ruiz, Rias Baixas, Galicia, Spain has a clear and bright yellow colour. Intense and complex nose showcasing aromas of white flowers (citrus blossom, lilies), herbs (lemon verbena, aniseed), fruit (melon, pear, papaya) and subtle notes of spice. Full bodied, its fruity complexity combines with wet-stone minerality on the palate prior to a long and crisp finish. The combination of five grape varieties native to Rias Baixas makes this a wine with a uniquely distinct character.
\'L\'Expressio del Priorat\' Tinto is a true expression of the Priorat region, powerful and seductive with blueberry fruit on the nose and the classic flinty mineral character of the wines from this region. Juicy and fruit driven with tender tannins and good acidity. Smooth and luscious on the palate with a fine texture, hints of soft warm spices and a long fleshy berry and black cherry finish.
Lan Reserva, Bodegas Lan, Rioja is a brillant ripe black cherry red colour with good depth, fruity aromas with elegant notes of fine wood, velvety mouthfeel, aged in American and French oak barrels for 12 months, further 24 months in bottle before releasing for sale,
El Meson Rioja Gran Reserva has an intense ruby red colour in the glass with forceful aromas of ripe red fruit and a subtle touch of soft sweet vanilla. This well structured and superbly balanced wine has an revealing aftertaste, ripe tannins and good acidity.
Pazo Barrantes Albarino Do Rias Baixas is a wine of great personality, with striking and fragrant varietal character. It charmes the nose with intense floral and fruity aromas and delights the mouth with its depth, elegance and freshness.
Familia Castano \"Dulce\" Monastrell DO Yecla is a deep purple to red colour, with a medium intensity of aromas, including black candied fruit, raisins and dried mango. Lots of plum jam and fig on the palate, all complimented by a pure acidity that balances the acidity.
Cien Y Pico \"Knights-Errant\" Garnacha Tintorera is a deep, darkly-coloured wine in the glass with glints of purple. The nose fills with perfumes of dark rich fruit such as blackberries and blackcurrants. On the palate, lots more fruit mixes well with soft warm spices and supple tannins. Hauntingly long on the finish.
Lias Albarino DO, Martin Codax, Rias Baixas, Galicia, An exhaustive selection of fine lees in all the tanks of the winery is made by our winemaking team who supervises “Battonage” during the first two months. The technique provides the wine with its unique silkiness and volume in mouth. After “Battonage” wine is aged during ten months in stainless steel tanks on these fine lees. High aromatic intensity, notes of very ripe fruit of pear, apple or white peach, reminiscent of clean lees aging (yeast, vanilla, fresh warm bread), Upfront in the mouth, with surprising fat and volume, long finish with fresh fruit, lactic and warm brioche notes.
Cerro Anon Gran Reserva Rioja, Bodegas Olarra has very complex and delicate aromas, full bodied, well balanced, silky with a lingering long finish, amazing vintage. Scored Outstanding 96 points in a blind tasting.
Lagunilla Gran Reserva Rioja, Marques de la Concordia, Spain is complex and smooth with hints of ripe red fruit and coconut and a long finish.
