"Bordeaux" a great or the greatest winemaking region in the world ? Many say it occupies a position at the pinnacle of world wine making.
The Bordeaux wine region certainly has the pedigree of greatness, its longevity of status, tradition and world wide fame goes back many centuries, some will say Burgundy is its equal and no doubt that debate will also last for centuries.
Sadly too many people view Bordeaux wines as too expensive and not affordable. Yes, many wines and sub-regions are in that category and that is why the perception of only high prices continues to prevail. Fine wine collectors and investors do dominate a large sector of the Bordeaux market.(as they do in Burgundy) The Medoc with its five designated growths, St. Emilion and its premier grand cru classe, the top wines of Pomerol and Graves and then the great white wines of Graves, Sauternes and Barsac are all monopolised by these fine wine enthusiasts. But, Bordeaux being such a huge wine growing region does produce very good quality wines to suit most budgets. Putting the top growths to one side, there is another quality sector with an appellation title of "Cru Bourgeois" with prices that can vary from a 3rd growth Medoc wine down to a much more reasonable cost. Following on from Cru Bourgeois we have dozens of "Petit Chateaux" within the famous Bordeaux sub-regions, again producing fine wines at a reasonable price. Finally we have hundreds of vineyards occupying the outer regions and so-called satelites of greater Bordeaux. Many producing excellent quality Bordeaux style wines at prices competing with the rest of the wine world.
One big advantage Bordeaux has over some other single grape or limited variety French regions is ability to successfully grow a wide variety of grapes and then its wine making ability to blend and deliver fine wines, even at times of indifferent vintages. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the most widely grown red grapes. Merlot being more dominent in the wines of Pomerol and St. Emilion, while Cabernet Sauvignon leads the way throughout the Medoc.
The three white grape varieties of Bordeaux are Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Bordeaux white wines are synonymous with outstanding dessert wines and it’s a well known fact this sub-region of Sauternes and Barsac are producing a collection of many of the worlds best known and most expensive sweet wines. But, then we have another Bordeaux surprise in its sub-region of "Graves" also producing some of the world’s best and most expensive dry white wines e.g. "Haut Brion" and "Domaine de Chevalier" who also produce great top of the range red wines.

Produced in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers in Bordeaux, this is a vibrant white Bordeaux with delicate tropical fruit and citrus fruit flavours and a crisp, dry, refreshing finish. a delicacy and a prestigious bouquet, a full wine, this has rich grass and apple flavours. Showered with gold medals, Château Haut Pougnan marks another gem from this vintage. Fruity and with plenty of particularly well-defined tannins, it continues to thrill with its elegance and balance on the palate. The bouquet is fine and rich, with aromas of black fruits and undergrowth. On the palate, one feels velvet with aromas of jam and a touch of vanilla.
Chateau Larrivaux, Haut Medoc, Half Bottle,The estate has been handed down from women to women since the 15th century and is now managed by Bérangère Tesseron, who keeps the family tradition of high quality, affordable wines. Château Plantey de Lieujean offers a nice mix dark cherries and plums followed by spices, flowers and hints of tobacco. On the palate this possesses a medium-plus body with nicely polished tannins. Chateau Tour De Capet Saint Emilion Grand Cru is intense purple in colour, with a bouquet of ripe dark berries, tobacco and mint with hints of cinnamon, vanilla and cloves. On the palate, it is full bodied with soft, velvety tannins and a long, juicy finish.

Chateau Larose Perganson, Les Hauts de Perganson, Haut-Médoc is a very dark colour of very intense deep ruby with some deep purple reflections. Ripe aromas of small black fruit and liquorice dominate, underlined by nice vanilla notes. The palate is full and flavourful with good integration of tannins, already well enveloped.
Chateau Macquin, Saint Georges-Saint Emilion has alluring aromas and flavours of ripe red cherry fruits, cassis, hint of liquorice and tobacco. It is full bodied with silky, ripe tannins.
Chateau Mouras Graves, Bourdeaux has a complex and aromatic nose of red berry and blackberry fruits, mingled with spices and a touch of cedar wood. On the palate there is a supple texture with an attractive mineral character that defines the appellation of Graves. Dark fruit and spice dominate the mid-palate providing excellent depth that is supported by ripe, smooth tannins. Chateau Bellevue Medoc Cru Bourgeois has intense aromas of black fruits, forest floor and smoke. The palate has bold fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, raspberry & black cherry, layers of earthy forest floor, smoke & leather, chocolate and vanilla oak - all held together with a strong tannic structure.
Domaine Mimosa Pomerol is a dark dusty ruby colour. A bright, juicy and attractive French red with a playful interplay of fruit and savoury tones.
Chateau Patache D\'aux Medoc Cru Bourgeois is aged for 12 months in oak barrels before bottling. The blend is around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon with the remainder being mainly Merlot. The aromas are of black cherries and liquorice with some herbal and spicy hints while on the palate some ripe blackcurrent flavours also come through and lead onto a rounded and pleasantly rich finish.
