Buy Red and White Bordeaux Wines Online with UK and Worldwide Delivery
"Bordeaux" a great or the greatest winemaking region in the world ? Many say it occupies a position at the pinnacle of world wine making.
The Bordeaux wine region certainly has the pedigree of greatness, its longevity of status, tradition and world wide fame goes back many centuries, some will say Burgundy is its equal and no doubt that debate will also last for centuries.
Sadly too many people view Bordeaux wines as too expensive and not affordable. Yes, many wines and sub-regions are in that category and that is why the perception of only high prices continues to prevail. But, by careful research, viewing a good wine merchants wine list or talking to, many a affordable red and white wines of excellent quality can be acquired and thoroughly enjoyed.
Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants, Southampton, Hampshire,UK hold significant stock in store and online of Bordeaux red and white wines at prices to suit most tastes and budgets.
Fine wine collectors and investors do dominate a large sector of the Bordeaux market.(as they do in Burgundy) The Medoc with its five designated growths, St. Emilion and its premier grand cru classe, the top wines of Pomerol and Graves and then the great white wines of Graves, Sauternes and Barsac are all monopolised by these fine wine enthusiasts. But, Bordeaux being such a huge wine growing region does produce very good quality wines to suit most budgets. Putting the top growths to one side, there is another quality sector with an appellation title of "Cru Bourgeois" with prices that can vary from a 3rd growth Medoc wine down to a much more reasonable cost. Following on from Cru Bourgeois we have dozens of "Petit Chateaux" within the famous Bordeaux sub-regions, again producing fine wines at a reasonable price. Finally we have hundreds of vineyards occupying the outer regions and so-called satelites of greater Bordeaux. Many producing excellent quality Bordeaux style wines at prices competing with the rest of the wine world.
One big advantage Bordeaux has over some other single grape or limited variety French regions is ability to successfully grow a wide variety of grapes and then its wine making ability to blend and deliver fine wines, even at times of indifferent vintages. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are the most widely grown red grapes. Merlot being more dominent in the wines of Pomerol and St. Emilion, while Cabernet Sauvignon leads the way throughout the Medoc.
The three white grape varieties of Bordeaux are Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Bordeaux white wines are synonymous with outstanding dessert wines and it’s a well known fact this sub-region of Sauternes and Barsac are producing a collection of many of the worlds best known and most expensive sweet wines. But, then we have another Bordeaux surprise in its sub-region of "Graves" also producing some of the world’s best and most expensive dry white wines e.g. "Haut Brion" and "Domaine de Chevalier" who also produce great top of the range red wines.
