Many folks view rum in four different styles or categories….white and overproof rum, aged rum, rhum agricole and navy and dark rum. Although the production processes and uses of The sugar cane fruit are different, and as a slight contridiction many of use will see similarities between the four different styles in a blind tasting. Just food for thought.
Aged rum can cover a variety of options in the world of rum. Most are a bright and attractive golden amber colour, giving off fruity spices and caramel tastes to the tongue. Aged rums are usually from different vintages or batches that are incorporated together to ensure continuity of style and taste from year to year. Not to dissimilar of the winemaker who has the task of maintaining the vineyards reputation for continuity of style and taste, irrespective of any variation in a particular vintage. Many of these styles of rum highlight on their labels their age sometimes even the various ages that make up the final batch of rum.Although some rums like Mount Gay exhibit the XO mark similar to cognac on their label.Another highly recommended classic is Doorly's 12 year old Barbados aged rum.
Rhum agricole is different from most other rums in that it is produced from processed sugar cane juice. On the Caribbean Island of Martinique (famous for its rhum agricole) sugar cane is grown specifically for making this style of rhum. The process is first to ferment the fresh sugar cane juice and then to distill into a strong flavoured spirit. Probably the best style of rhum/rum to influence most rum Cocktails----just try it in a classic daiquiri.
Navy and dark rum are available in the main under two categories, some rums whose styles and origins go way back to the eighteenth and nineteenth century when basic rums were coloured to create the perception of old age, rich and tasty. Then we have quality traditional rums with no artificial flavourings or colour added and these full bodied dark rums have a nose of molasses, treacle and toffee with a smooth mellow finish combined with a lingering and memorable sweet flavour. Some notable navy and dark rums would be Goslings Black Seal, Myer's Original Dark and the Pusser's range of navy rums.
White and overproof rums----the statement is a little self explanatory and usually refers to overproof white rums with an alcohol content of greater than 57.5%, which is very high indeed. J Wray and Nephew's White rum is probably the best selling rum of its type in the world----it comes in at 63% a very potent white rum and not for the faint hearted. Another excellent white rum which is not over proof would be Matusalem Platino from the Dominican Republic at 40% abv.

Diplomatico Mantuano Dark Rum has been aged for up to eight years and is a fine blend of rums made from molasses and sugar cane honeys. Rich and spicy on the nose with little hints of vanilla. Treacle, dark cherries and nutmeg come forth onto the palate, then leaving slow sweet spice and oak finish.
Rhum JM Agricole Gold displays a rich sugarcane flavour that has beautiful viscosity on the palate. This golden rum also has flavours of warm gingerdread which are sofened by hints of vanilla and hazelnuts derived from its time spent maturing in oak.
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva Dark Rum is truly an exceptional rum made blended from rums that have been ageing for up to twelve years. The rum is big and complex on the nose with aromas of fruit cake, baked apples and dried ginger. The palate first senses warm chocolate sauce, then sweet toffee and tropical fruit flavours. The finish seems to last for ever with so many overtones of orange chocolate.
Rhum Clement Vieux Select Barrel, Martinique has a rich fruity nose with aromas of nutmeg and cloves. The palate is full of sweet dried fruits and hits of dark chocolate and hazelnuts. The finish is long with nuances of nuts and raisins.
Ron Barcelo Imperial Rum, Dominican Republic has aromas of butter cream, dried cherries, intense vanilla, pineapple jam and caramelised walnuts followed by a soft entrance to a dry but fruity medium and exuberant body with great depth and balance.
Westerhall Estate Rum No.5, Grenada, Aged for five years in oak casks, silky smooth and exceptionally palatable with buttery, honey sweet flavours with a touch of spice. Enjoyable neat or on the rocks, also works well with coconut water or ginger ale.
.Trois Rivieres Martinique Ambre Rhum Agricole is full of oaky spice on the nose with lot of dried fruit such as raisins, prunes and mango in the background. The palate soon fills-up with sweet and sour apricot, brown sugar and manuka honey. The finish is rich and long with a mixture of stewed apples, nutmeg and other sweet warm spices.
Clarke’s Old Grog Rum is a premium sipping rum and dates back from early days when the finest of Grenada’s Rum was shipped to His Majesty George III of England. In order to identify the King’s Rum, the casks were marked G.R.O.G., which is the abbreviation for Georgius Rex Old Grenada. It\'s aroma has a hint of smoky oak, and tastes of tropical fruit, spices and oak elements that linger on smoothly.
Diplomatico Planas White Rum a very refined blanco rum is the result of careful blending of rums in cases aged for up to six years. There is barley sugar on the nose and a little dried fruit like apricots and mango. The palate picks-up candied citrus zest and sherbert lemons. This flavoursome white rum finishes with soft spice and the continuity of dried fruit on the tongue.
