Burgundy and Bordeaux must have the mother status of all wines and wine growing regions on the planet Earth. At times their wines roll of the top of the tongue as if no other wines or regions exist…..a slight exageration, but some traditionalists may agree. Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants based in Southampton, Hampshire, UK are huge fans of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines made employing the traditional Burgundian methods.
The wine catchment area of Burgundy is elongated and far-reaching in geographical size, starting with Chablis in the far north and moving South includes Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beaune, Cote Chalonnaise, Maconnaise and the furtherest region south is of course Beaujolais.
Burgundy has three prominent grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay, all three being well represented throughout the listings of Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants. We also list the non prominent grape variety ....Bourgogne Aligote.
The enormous expanse of Burgundy supports a listing of nearly 100 Wine Appellation Controlees. With such scale careful selection of growers and wines is paramount since quality and value for money can be an issue and certainly was an issue a few decades back when a few Negociants were specialising in blending. Even though these practices are long gone, quality will always vary within regions as big as Burgundy and research, knowledge and reputation are extremely important. Many knowledgeable wine experts believe making wines just utilising a single grape variety as per the Burgundy Appellation for red and white wines is much more difficult than producing wine from a blend of different grape varieties as per Bordeaux. If a vintage in France one year is not so good, then the skills of the wine maker in Bordeaux has a better chance of producing a reasonable wine than perhaps an even more skilled wine maker in Burgundy who has only a single grape variety to work with.

Domaine Corinne Perchaud Chablis 1er Cru \"Vaucoupin\" has an initial bouquet of spring flowers, followed by citrus aromas such as orange and fresh pear notes. The palate is mineral with a citrus vein. It is a full-bodied and well balanced wine.
Domaine Corinne Perchaud Chablis 1er Cru \"Fourchaume\" is bright yellow in colour with aromas of honey, lemon and peach. The palate is full and lively, with delicious fruit flavours and textbook minerality running onto the long refreshing finish.
David Moret Rully is light golden in colour with a varying bouquet of flavours including elderberry, lemon and white peach. The palate strikes the characteristically Burgundian balance between acidity and richness, along with tastes of more fruit, nuts and manuka honey.
Saint Aubin 1er Cru Vignes Moingeon, Domaine Billard Pere et Fils has an intense aroma of lemon peel, butter backed up by stone fruit. Fantastic weight on the palate, Beautiful integrated oak, well balanced with superb length.
Domaine Chevalier Ladoix Blanc \"Bois de Mont\" is bright yellow in colour with aromas of citrus and honey. The palate is medium-bodied and refreshing, with a firm structure, but appealing lemon and stone fruit intensity to round the finish, along with gentle spice and vanilla complexity.
Jean-Claude Boisset Santenay 1er Cru \"Les Maladieres\" has a very deep colour with flashes of ruby. The nose is bursting with red fruits, dark cherries coupled with hints of liquorice. All follow onto the palate and a lovely long finish.
Domaine Laroche Chablis 1er Cru \"Les Vaillons\" Vieilles Vignes is an intense gold colour in the glass. Complex aromas with mineral hints, ripe pear and summer blossom. The palate offers intense yet dry white fruit flavours, a long finish and a fine freshness.
Jane Eyre Cotes de Nuits Villages has a deep rich red colour in the glass and boasts aromas of ripe black and red cherry fruit, coupled with delicate notes of rose petal. On the palate, juicy red fruits dominate with the wines warm spicy character. The long finish is supported by delicate tannins and bright acidity.
Jean-Claude Boisset Santenay Blanc 1er Cru \"Passetemps\" is pale gold in colour and offers aromas of lychee, pineapple and citrus on the nose. These intense flavours follow through on the palate, which is very rich with great acidity to balance the wine perfectly.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Savigny-Les-Beaune is a beautiful bright, deep ruby colour in the glass. The nose shows expressive fresh red fruit with notes of strawberry and raspberry. The aromas are subtle and delicate with harmonious floral notes. On the palate, the tannins are silky and elegant with a very nice balance between acidity and roundness.
Domaine Glantenay Pommard has a deep, dark red colour with mauve highlights and the wine is attractively scented, boasting aromas of juicy bramble fruit. It is well structured on the palate, with grainy tannins and good length. The oak is nicely restrained thanks to the small portion of wine that went into the barrel.
Jane Eyre Beaune 1er Cru \"Cents Vignes\" has bright, red fruit on the nose, perfumed with violet flowers and a little spice. On the palate, this is a very serious wine, well structured with nice tannins and a more savoury character with a long finish.
Jean-Claude Boisset Nuits-Saint-Georges Le Coteau des Bois has a deep red colour with purple hues. Then, aromas of dark cherry, rose petals and hints of liquorice on the nose. The palate enjoys the same flavours, but more concentrated, then a nice mineral finish.
Domaine Chevalier Ladoix Blanc 1er Cru \"Les Grechons\" is bright lemon to yellow in colour and has a complex, open nose of citrus, pear and spice. The palate is full with a lovely intense fruit character that lingers well on the lively, long finish.

Jean-Claude Boisset Gevrey-Chambertin is bright ruby red in colour, with garnet highlights. An attractive nose, with perfumes of strawberries, blackberries and hints of liquorice. Ripe, silky tannins provide an elegant backbone and balance the smooth fruit character on the palate. A powerful wine with a very long finish.
