Burgundy and Bordeaux must have the mother status of all wines and wine growing regions on the planet Earth. At times their wines roll of the top of the tongue as if no other wines or regions exist…..a slight exageration, but some traditionalists may agree. Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants based in Southampton, Hampshire, UK are huge fans of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines made employing the traditional Burgundian methods.
The wine catchment area of Burgundy is elongated and far-reaching in geographical size, starting with Chablis in the far north and moving South includes Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beaune, Cote Chalonnaise, Maconnaise and the furtherest region south is of course Beaujolais.
Burgundy has three prominent grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay, all three being well represented throughout the listings of Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants. We also list the non prominent grape variety ....Bourgogne Aligote.
The enormous expanse of Burgundy supports a listing of nearly 100 Wine Appellation Controlees. With such scale careful selection of growers and wines is paramount since quality and value for money can be an issue and certainly was an issue a few decades back when a few Negociants were specialising in blending. Even though these practices are long gone, quality will always vary within regions as big as Burgundy and research, knowledge and reputation are extremely important. Many knowledgeable wine experts believe making wines just utilising a single grape variety as per the Burgundy Appellation for red and white wines is much more difficult than producing wine from a blend of different grape varieties as per Bordeaux. If a vintage in France one year is not so good, then the skills of the wine maker in Bordeaux has a better chance of producing a reasonable wine than perhaps an even more skilled wine maker in Burgundy who has only a single grape variety to work with.

Domaine Claude Dugat Bourgogne Rouge has a nose that offers rich and expressive aromas of red and black cherries, raspberries and red current. On the palate the wine is very generous, with a rich, silky texture and a wonderful long finish.
Domaine Borgeot Chassagne Montrachet \"Vieilles Vignes\" has a huge complexity on the nose, with orange flowers and lively mineral notes. On the palate, good acidity balances the richness of the body and there is a little spiciness on the finish.
David Moret Puligny-Montrachet has a pale golden hue in the glass with zesty citrus aromas. This Chardonnay is very generous on the palate with spicy undertones and a long lingering finish. Delicious and complex, it is difficult to find a white wine like it outside of Burgundy.
Jane Eyre Beaune 1er Cru \"Cents Vignes\" has bright, red fruit on the nose, perfumed with violet flowers and a little spice. On the palate, this is a very serious wine, well structured with nice tannins and a more savoury character with a long finish.
Jean-Claude Boisset Beaune !er Cru \"Les Greves\" is a wine with rich dark fruit and a little implied sweetness. Powerful with great structure and very fine flavours of fruit and nice tannins running through the core of the wine. Elegant and very long on the finish.
Domaine Glantenay Chambolle-Musigny has rich aromas of dark fruit, notably blackcurrants and dark cherries, exude from the glass. Woody, warm spicy notes give way to a fresh, fruity palate. It is a fine delicate and very high quality wine.
Jean-Claude Boisset Pommard \"Les Vaumuriens\" is a light ruby colour in the glass with glints of violet. A beautiful bouquet of dried fruit and soft spice in troduce and elegant Pinot Noir with refined tannins. Well balanced, the wine is silky with a long lingering finish.
Domaine Laroche Chablis Grand Cru \"Les Blanchots\" is pale gold in the glass with typical spring blossom aromas.The Grand Cru is full bodied with delicate mineral tastes and a silky mouthfeel, all supported by a well balanced fruit and lively acidity.
Domaine Borgeot Puligny-Montrachet \"Les Grands Champs\" is an elegant Puligny, with pretty floral aromas followed by tropical fruit flavours including pineapple and hints of tangerine. Fresh with mouthwatering acidity and lovely minerality on the finish
Domaine Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru \"Les Santenots\" is dark red in the glass and black cherry being the overwhelming perfume on the nose. The black cherries are supported by blackberries and raspberries on the palate with the addition of supple tannins. The fruit and acidity are well balanced on a long lingering finish.
Jean-Claude Boisset Nuits-Saint-Georges \"Les Charbonnieres\" has a deep red colour with purple hues. Then, aromas of dark cherry, rose petals and hints of liquorice on the nose. The palate enjoys the same flavours, but more concentrated, then a nice mineral finish.
Full bodied dry white, rich and succulent with concentrated long memorable flavours
Wonderful aromas of toasted almonds, freshly baked biscuits, great intensity with vanilla notes, fat and full of tropical fruit, a powerful lingering appeal
David Moret Meursault \"Narvaux\" has a beautiful golden colour in the glass. A creamy and powerful Meursault, round and rich on the palate, with appetizing orchard fruit characters. It is lifted on the finish by vibrant and well balanced acidity.
David Moret Meursault \"Sous la Velle\" is typical of a good Mersault; powerful, concentrated and round. Aromas and flavours of fabulous Golden Delicious apples, layered citrus and white peach, with typical minerality and wonderful balance.
Jean-Claude Boisset Chambolle Musigny is beautiful dark in colour with ruby highlights. A nice intensity, with aromas of violet, cherry flavours and soft spice. On the palate, the wine has very fine tannins, lots of fruit and a good long finish.
Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots, Domaine Glantenay has cherry as the overwhelming perfume on this Premier Cru. Black cherries are supported by blackberries and raspberries. Lovely tannins on the palate, and beautiful finesse.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Nuits-Saint-Georges \"Les Plateaux\" has a deep intense ruby red colour with complex aromas of cherries, blackcurrants and mango. The palated follows with more dark fruit and hints of soft warm spice. There is excellent balance between the tannins, acidity and fruit, all providing a long finish with nuances of vanilla.
Vosne Romanee \"Aux Reas\", Domaine AF Gros, is an excellent wine made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes from vineyards that extend off the Clos de Réas at the foot of Nuits-Saint Georges. It is well structured with powerful aromas and a round and velvety palate. The 2011 vintage has very elegant and classy Pinot Noirs,
Jean-Claude Boisset Meursault 1er Cru \"Les Charmes\" Deep yellow colour in the glass with ripe peach aromas on the nose. Dry on the palate, but full-bodied and rich with white and yellow fruits. A very nice fresh finish.
David Moret Meursault 1er Cru \"Les Charmes\" is a lovely golden colour in the glass and has floral aromas and hints of white peach on the nose. On the palate, this Meursault is very concentrated with a lively acidity, fine integrated oak and a creamy texture.
Domaine Borgeot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru \"Clos St. Jean\" is a lovely light golden colour in the glass with aromas spring flowers and white peaches on the nose. On the palate there is lots more fruit with a little spice and vanilla coming through. Lively acidity helps to provide a long and well balanced finish.
Jean-Claude Boisset Vosne-Romanee \"Les Jacquines\" is intensely coloured in the glass with a tinge of ruby. The wine is very expressive on the nose with aromas of blackcurrants and warm spice. The palate shows great attack and is very long and pure on the finish.
