Burgundy and Bordeaux must have the mother status of all wines and wine growing regions on the planet Earth. At times their wines roll of the top of the tongue as if no other wines or regions exist…..a slight exageration, but some traditionalists may agree. Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants based in Southampton, Hampshire, UK are huge fans of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines made employing the traditional Burgundian methods.
The wine catchment area of Burgundy is elongated and far-reaching in geographical size, starting with Chablis in the far north and moving South includes Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beaune, Cote Chalonnaise, Maconnaise and the furtherest region south is of course Beaujolais.
Burgundy has three prominent grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay, all three being well represented throughout the listings of Alexander Hadleigh Wine Merchants. We also list the non prominent grape variety ....Bourgogne Aligote.
The enormous expanse of Burgundy supports a listing of nearly 100 Wine Appellation Controlees. With such scale careful selection of growers and wines is paramount since quality and value for money can be an issue and certainly was an issue a few decades back when a few Negociants were specialising in blending. Even though these practices are long gone, quality will always vary within regions as big as Burgundy and research, knowledge and reputation are extremely important. Many knowledgeable wine experts believe making wines just utilising a single grape variety as per the Burgundy Appellation for red and white wines is much more difficult than producing wine from a blend of different grape varieties as per Bordeaux. If a vintage in France one year is not so good, then the skills of the wine maker in Bordeaux has a better chance of producing a reasonable wine than perhaps an even more skilled wine maker in Burgundy who has only a single grape variety to work with.

David Moret Puligny-Montrachet has a pale golden hue in the glass with zesty citrus aromas. This Chardonnay is very generous on the palate with spicy undertones and a long lingering finish. Delicious and complex, it is difficult to find a white wine like it outside of Burgundy.
Domaine Borgeot Puligny-Montrachet \"Les Grands Champs\" is an elegant Puligny, with pretty floral aromas followed by tropical fruit flavours including pineapple and hints of tangerine. Fresh with mouthwatering acidity and lovely minerality on the finish
David Moret Meursault 1er Cru \"Les Genevrieres\" is a wine of great elegance and fine character. It offers very good balance between tropical fruit aromas and a poised acidity. A slight creaminess leaves a mouthwatering finish.
Pommard, 1er Cru Les Pezerolles, Domaine A F Gros is an ample, rich, powerful palate, floral nose of roses and peonies, sweet taste of prunes and chocolate.
Domaine Glantenay Volnay 1er Cru \"Les Santenots\" is dark red in the glass and black cherry being the overwhelming perfume on the nose. The black cherries are supported by blackberries and raspberries on the palate with the addition of supple tannins. The fruit and acidity are well balanced on a long lingering finish.
Jane Eyre Corton-Renardes Grand Cru is a wine with great finesse. Fresh red fruit aromas and also a little warm spice and hints of stewed red plums. On the palate, tannins are well balanced and refined, with coffee flavours and vanilla supporting well the red fruit characters. A superb long lasting finish.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Nuits-Saint-Georges \"Les Plateaux\" has a deep intense ruby red colour with complex aromas of cherries, blackcurrants and mango. The palated follows with more dark fruit and hints of soft warm spice. There is excellent balance between the tannins, acidity and fruit, all providing a long finish with nuances of vanilla.
Domaine Laroche Chablis Grand Cru \"Les Clos\" a lovely gold colour with subtle notes of white blossom on the nose. A good balance of ripe white fruit and lively acidity. The finish is elegant and exceptionally long, with vibrant minerality.
David Moret Meursault 1er Cru \"Les Perrieres\" has a deep golden colour and a fragrant nose of lemons, white peach and green apples. The wine has wonderful minerality, mouthwatering acidity and superb acidity.
Jane Eyre Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru \"Les Corbeaux\" has lovely aromas of rich red fruit, mulberry and violets on the nose. Good acidity, savoury tannin and well structured, fresh red berry flavours all harmonise on the palate, making this a superbly balanced wine.
David Moret Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru \"Les Folatieres\" is a superb Premier Cru Chardonnay. Supremely fine and elegant with wonderful minerality and white fruit levels. The palate is creamy with lovely fresh acidity and great fruit intensity with a long finish.
Jean-Claude Boisset Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru is ruby red in colour, with great intensity on the nose with blackberry and red fruit. On the palate, the wine is delicate with a fine balance between supple tannins, ripe fruit and tannins. The finish is exceedingly long.
Chateau de Santenay Clos du Vougeot Grand Cru is a rich dark garnet colour in the glass. This wine offers powerful and concentrated black fruit aromas with an elegant touch of oak. On the palate, flavours of black cherry black berry fruits are complimented by subtle warm spice and move onto a long lingering finish.

Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru \"Les Orveaux\" has a lovely ruby red colour with aromas of red fruits, blackcurrants and raspberries. Robust and richly perfumed with both a silky and rustic character. It is fresh yet mellow and supremely well balanced.
Jean-Claude Boisset Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a very deep red colour in the glass with violet hues. Complex on the nose, combining rose perfume and subtle red fruits that lead onto warm spicy notes, with a touch of oak. Gorgeous length on the palate with hints of vanilla from long oak ageing. The extended finish is very elegant.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux Grand Cru has a lovely vanilla scent which combine with red fruits and warm spices. The great complexity of the bouquet makes this a wine which is both rich and subtle, it is silky,full-bodied and also mellow, with fine, delicate and great balance with the tannins.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is bright garnet in colour and a fine Pinot Noir bouquet on the nose with plenty of red cherries and strawberries. The palate is full and juicy with good depth of soft spice and red fruits. Silky tannins support a long finish with mellow vanilla nuances.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru has a pure bright deep red colour with aromas of prunes and warm spice on the nose. On the palate, this wine is subtle and refined, it reveals the complex nature of a really good Burgundy. Full-bodied, rich and exceptionally harmonious.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg Grand Cru has ruby a velvety ruby colour with violet hues. The aromas are complex and rich, lots of dark red fruit, including ripe cherries and blackberries. The palate enjoys more rich fruit, dried mango and hints of soft warm spice. The finish is very long, elegant and full of very interesting flavours, including vanilla and cinnamon fro the long oak ageing.
