Venice’s region is a verdant land of vines that flourish in hills and plains as northern Italy’s most abundant source of wine. Most wines are designed to be drunk young in a region where whites account for more than seventy five percent of production. Certain Cabernets, Merlots and other reds of the eastern Veneto age well. Verona’s sweet Recioto della Valpolicella often improves with time, and its dry counterpart , Amarone, is one of the world’s great wines for aging. Some sturdy Valpolicella can age well too, as can Custoza, Lugana, Soave Classico and Recioto di Soave.
