Piemontese wines are so distinctive and most of the regions classified wines come derive from native vines and single varietals predominate, though not all carry variety names. Piemont ranks only seventh amongst Italy’s twenty regions in volume of production but its fifty two DOC zones are the most of any region.

Traditionally styled Barolo, from the noble Nebbiolo grape and Barbaresco have responded to modern know-how and are more impressive. The lively, fruity Dolcetto remains as popular as ever, both in Italy and abroad. Barbera with its plentiful fruit is very popular with the Piedmontese.

Asti from the Moscato Bianco grape is the world’s most popular sweet sparkling wine but there is the gently bubbly Moscato d’Asti. The native varieties Arneis and Cortese of Gavi fame, make increasingly stylish dry white wines.
